![]() ![]() Racoons are very tough critters and one needs to balance power with noise abatement. It is advertised at 1000fps, carries a nice HP round and was as effectve as either CCI MM or Winchester SuperX on the masked bandits. ![]() At least that is what they told me, wouldn't know myself of course since I hear those kids of things are illigal. Someone told me that when fired through a pop bottle, stuffed with steel wool and taped to the muzzle, it is Hollywood quiet making less noise than a Daisy Red Ryder. I was shooting one racoon each night for the entire month of June, with zero comments from anyone. Out of a long barreled SS (24") the Foicchi was very quiet and brought no complaints from the neighbors when fired at 2am. I discovered the Fiochi ammo during a small war I fought with racoons that were trying to kill my chickens. I live in a rural area, but have neighbors 100 yards away, one of them being a county Circuit Court judge. My favorite quiet ammo is the Fiochi sub sonic. The Aquillia ammo has the reputation of doing exactly what you discribe and some folks have replaced their barrels in order to shoot that specific ammo! Our motto is "We may not hit you right between the eyes, but we're still going to mess your face up." The bullets flatten out when they hit and look like little fried eggs about 1/2" in diameter. Accuracy seems pretty decent and we have shooting stations at 50 and 80 yards with 7", 6" and 4" gongs. So far this summer and fall, we've gone through almost 2,100 rounds of the CCIs with only one that didn't fire (it fired on the second try) and they're pretty clean. It's a pretty drastic noise level difference. That's when we pull out the Henrys and the quiet ammo and may shoot 400-500 quiet rounds between the two of us over a couple of days. Luckily, there aren't many and most don't spend much time there. After all that, and since we're shooting near the lake shore, you start to feel sorry for the neighbors. During a typical couple of days, she shoots a couple boxes of 17s (Daly Little Sharps), I shoot a couple boxes of 22 Mags (1885 Low Wall), and I'll take 30-40 BPC shots (45-70 Sharps or 44-40 1873 lever gun) or shots with one of the front-stuffers. I only try head shots and hope for a shot less than 30 yards.Įither way, I now have 9-10 hares all put away for the winter and have 3 more weeks of hunting before leaving for NY to bow hunt for deer.My wife and I shoot a lot of the Quiet 22LRs when we go up north to visit my dad for a weekend and shoot gongs or our plywood buffalo. I don't know what the cycle for hares is but I saw about 20 more that I could not shoot at or spooked. They seem to kill very well with head shots. Next one was only 15 feet and he never knew what hit him. That one surprised me with my lack of sight in. Third bunny was the longest shot at about 40 yards and same thing, flat down. Next one, 20 yards, head shot and planted him. I walked up and found him about 5 feet away, dead. Bunny ran off! I was wondering if these things were going to work. My first hare was about 25 yards out last night and put the post on his head and squeezed. One note: In a semiauto, they are not going to cycle the action. I really want to use the trajectory that CCI lists as that might be ideal for hares and spruce hens. I want to sight in better than that but only one store in town has any of these. I had to use the "post" on my scope instead of the crosshairs to be on at ten yards. They sound like someone is clapping their hands when they go off no hearing protection needed for hunting. I have heard a lot about subsonic rounds so the other day I picked up a box of these. ![]()
